Francesco Santillo - Italian Designer

Francesco Santillo's story is one of those that I'm most passionate about. Not only because he is an Italian who has made himself known far from our country for one of the things, design, for which we are most loved, but also because we both share a great passion for cycling.
Francesco has come to design and then successfully sell a carbon racing bike with unique frame shapes and high performance. As he describes well on his website www.santillocicli.com, the RB-01 racing bike is inspired by the shape of a cheetah moving at full speed. Designing a racing bike frame that stands out is very difficult, the limitations are many and the margins for innovation are often relegated to materials and components. But the RB-01 model tells about the muscular gesture of the animal that stretches, as if the cyclist was transferring all its power on the asphalt.
Francesco was born Rome and grew up in Calabria, but his passion for design and automobiles brought him to Turin to the Institute of Applied Art and Design (IAAD) where he graduated at the end of the 80s. Turin at that time was not only the home of the automobile industry, but also the cradle of industrial design and Francesco immediately began working with one of the most prestigious names like Giorgetto Giugiaro (Italdesign). In the early years he collaborated on ambitious projects of ItalDesign, such as the Maserati 3200GT, the launch of the first series of the Fiat Punto and the Fiat 500, and then became the Chief Designer. At the end of the 90's he joined Daimler Chrysler (Mercedes) as Senior Designer working on the S-Class.
The Italian style is unique in the world and we often forget that, but Francesco was soon intercepted by the world's largest car manufacturer, Toyota, and then a few years later became the Chief Designer of Honda.
His style is unmistakable, born from a passion for shapes and lines that he developed in years when the design was first conceived by hand on paper. Now everything is designed on CAD, but for Francesco the passage by hand is still fundamental to visualize first of all the idea of a new project, which he then perfects on PC. How he came to design a unique bike model has happened almost by accident, as often happens to creative people. Passionate about animals but also about speed, he tried to put on paper the elegant but strong gesture of the cheetah, transferring the perfection of nature in an ultra-lightweight and high performance carbon frame.

La storia di Francesco Santillo e’ una di quelle che piu’ mi ha appassionato. Non solo perche’ e’ un italiano che si e’ fatto conoscere lontano dal nostro paese per una delle cose, il design, per le quali siamo piu’ amati, ma anche perche’ condividiamo entrambi una grande passione per la bicicletta.
Francesco e’ arrivato a disegnare e poi a vendere con successo un telaio da bici da corsa in carbonio dalle forme uniche e dalle prestazioni performanti. Come ben descrive nel suo sito www.santillocicli.com, la bici da corsa modello RB-01 si ispira alla forma di un ghepardo che avanza a tutta velocita’. Disegnare un telaio di una bicicletta da corsa che si distingua e’ molto difficile, i limiti sono molti e i margini di innovazione spesso sono relegati ai materiali e ai componenti. Ma il modello RB-01 racconta proprio del gesto musculare dell’animale che si allunga, come se lo stesse facendo il ciclista che si protende a trasferire tutta la propria potenza sull’asfalto.
Francesco nasce a Roma per poi trasferisci in Calabria, ma la passione per il design e le automobili lo portano a Torino all’Istituto d’Arte Applicata e Design (IAAD) dove si diploma a fine anni ’80. Torino all’epoca non sono era la patria dell’automobile, ma soprattutto la culla del design industriale e Francesco inizia subito con uno dei nomi piu’ prestigiosi, Giorgetto Giugiaro (Italdesign). Nei primi anni collabora a progetti ambiziosi di ItalDesign, come la Maserati 3200GT, il lancio della prima serie della Fiat Punto e la Fiat 500, per arrivare poi a diventare il Chief Designer. A fine anni 90’ entra poi nel gruppo Daimler Chrysler (Mercedes) come Senior Designer lavorando sulla S-Class.
Lo stile italiano e’ unico al mondo e spesso ce ne dimentichiamo ma Francesco viene presto intercettato dal piu’ grosso produttore mondiale di automobili, la Toyota, per poi diventare pochi anni dopo il Chief Designer della Honda.
Il suo stile e’ inconfondibile, nasce da una passione per le forme e le linee che sviluppa in anni in cui il disegno veniva prima di tutto concepito a mano su carta. Ora tutto e’ progettato su CAD, ma per Francesco il passaggio a mano e’ ancora fondamentale per visualizzare prima di tutto l’idea di un nuovo progetto, che poi perfezione comunque su PC. Come sia arrivato a disegnare un modello di bici unico nel suo genere e’ avventuto quasi per caso, come spesso accade ai creativi. Appassionato di animali ma anche di velocita’, ha cercato di mettere su carta il gesto elegante ma forte del ghepardo, trasferendo la perfezione della natura in un telaio in carbonio ultra leggero e performante.
